Our two Research Centres are open to members of the public, South Australian Government agency staff, and Local Government authority staff. Contact details, locations and opening hours may be found at the links below. We look forward to welcoming visitors to both sites, where you will find modern facilities for searching, ordering and viewing South Australian archival records. Each of our two Research Centres offers different features and services. Both sites have disability access. The City Research Centre is located in the centre of the City of Adelaide close to the Adelaide Railway Station. Records may be ordered in advance for viewing, with twice daily deliveries from the Gepps Cross Repository. The Gepps Cross Research Centre is located 10 km north of the City of Adelaide. Free parking and a lunchroom are located on site. The State Records Archival Collection is held at our Gepps Cross site. Should you wish to order and view a large number of original records, we recommend you visit the Gepps Cross Research Centre for more efficient retrieval service. Also, some original records, because of their fragile nature, size or format, can only be viewed at the Gepps Cross Research Centre.

Your First Visit - Registration
When you visit a Research Centre for the first time you will be asked to register as a public user and obtain a user ID number. If you are registering on-line via ArchivesSearch, you will need to pick up your user ID card when you visit the Research Centre.

What Assistance Is Available at a Research Centre?
State Records staff on duty in our Research Centres can assist you to search for and order records from our collection and advise on access restrictions. Additionally, comprehensive lists, indexes and subject guides have been developed to help you identify relevant records. No fee is incurred by customers carrying out their own research except for Copying Services. Advice or guidance given to Research Centre users is also free. Staff on duty will: - be clearly identified
- provide assistance to researchers in using our finding aids and search tools
- offer Copying Services

What Research Services Are Offered?
The following research services can be offered: - validation of personal information for rights and entitlement purposes
- guidance / advice on records likely to be relevant to a topic (source analysis)
- confirmation of correct references
- supply of copies of brochures, guides or other publications (charges may apply)
- supply of copies of a record, where a full and accurate reference is provided (Copying Services charges apply)
- confirmation of correct references
- requests to access personal records and provide copies of them, e.g. a school admission register entry (See Accessing Your School Records)
- requests for assistance from people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent seeking access to records for family reunification purposes

What Research Services Are Not Offered?
State Records staff do not undertake the following research on behalf of customers: - complex, in-depth or lengthy research
- requests to view, or obtain copies of, original Births, Deaths and Marriages records. Researchers will be referred to the controlling agency.
- requests for web addresses. Researchers will be referred to the State Records website at http://www.archives.sa.gov.au to browse the various 'Useful Links' sections and use the Search Engine that is available.
- requests for information that can be found in state or local libraries
- research for student assignments.
Researchers who are unable to attend a State Records Research Centre, or who wish to perform complex research, will need to engage the services of a professional researcher to act on their behalf. The Professional Historians Association (SA) Inc and the The South Australian Genealogy and Heraldry Society may be able to offer fee-based research services.
